I’m not friends with most of them now, relation doesn’t mean they’re out for your benefit. To me family is an earned position, not a given.. i mean i would be friendly towards them but they wouldn’t be friendly towards me. most of them aren’t even though we are related. I realized a long time ago that a shared family tree was not a reason to subject myself to toxic people. Anyone else ? No. I am seriously debating skipping the obligatory hollidays. The only reason I attend family gatherings is for my aging grandmother’s sake. Realistically no. Not that there is anything wrong with most of them but I’m a lawyer who lives half of the world away from them currently. One cousin is a bartender at a local pizza joint and is more of a ‘hippy’ than you’d expect from someone in their early 30’s today. We have absolutely nothing in common besides being in the same family and having lived in the same general area growing up. I owe $50 grand to my brother. I know he loves me, but the thing is, what he loves is his Big Brother, the person I used to be when he was 6 and I was 9. My brother’s the coolest person I’ve ever met, he rode the cryptocurrency rollercoaster and came out on top. I know he seems to think that I’m the coolest person he knows, but the truth is that I’m a parasite mooching off of him. The only reason anyone in my immediate family cares about me is because of who I was to them when I was a child. The only reason anyone in my extended family cares about me is because of who I am in relalation to my immediate family Edit for spelling errors

I grew up seeing a lot more of my moms side, they all moved away and I forget what some of them look like, so I definitely wouldn’t have ended up friends with them. My fathers brother has younger kids, his two cousins have kids around my age and we went to school together and shared some classes, I could see myself being friends with one. They’re not bad people. I don’t find them difficult. We’re just very different in our outlooks on life. We share history though and, especially as we’ve gotten older, that commonality is important. I seem to be in the minority, but yes! I would be friends with my sister a hundred times over. She’s awesome. So are my parents. I feel very lucky.
