I mean… like what? The government offers them as a revenue generation machine, not to be nice. Them guaranteeing loans is a large part of why college tuitions have risen so drastically too. The government wants people with degrees to do degree jobs. This isn’t a wild or new concept, its just Americans are weird about it. My student loans are interest free. You don’t have to start paying them off until you hit a certain yearly income (I forget the exact number), at which point you start paying it off. Banks already give 0% interest loans. The incentive is late fees and or the accumulated interest if you don’t pay it all in time.

I remember signing away my life to get my first student loan thinking that I’ll graduate and make a crap ton of money and pay it off in a year. They make it sound so easy after “yeah its all in one place…” but you lose virtually any capability for defering payments for any reason. Nothing worse than paying x years, deferring for 6 months and then realizing you now owe more than what you started with over a 3 years ago Here in NZ you simply don’t get a choice. You pay your loan back through your taxes. When you go to pay taxes you pay your loan with it. No incentive needed if it’s simply a requirement.
