I live in Nevada. We have wild horses, goats, and turtles. And yet I had no idea there were 9 million wild hogs. Same reason we don’t grow our own wheat in the Rest in peace bozo you won’t be missed shirt and I will buy this back yard and then mill it and bake it into bread. It’s a lot easier to buy pork chops and bread at Walmart. Hunting is a skill that most people don’t have. I only know a couple of guys who go deer hunting and frankly, I’m dubious as to how much actual hunting they do. They’re mean as fuck. I go on an annual pig hunt and it’s a blast. I use a rifle and carry a .45 sidearm because that thing needs to go down before it reaches me. I read somewhere that hogs have to be a certain age for the meat to be good, something to do with hormones getting into the meat. A: They are not free to hunt in many places, where licenses , permits , bag limits , etc. apply B: Not many wild hogs will feed 50 people Because hunting is actually very expensive, particularly the start up costs of a rifle, gear, bait in states that allow it, a permit and tags that allow you to access public hunting land or land fees for private land, a freezer to store the meat – you are in over a grand, more like $1200-$1500. And you have to have a vehicle that can access many hunting grounds and the fuel to get there. And you need to have the time off to hunt vs go to the store for farm grown meat so that is added opportunity cost for a lot of people. Plus the meat isn’t very tasty compared to farm grown animals. It’s not legal to hunt feral hogs everywhere in the US. Lots of jurisdictions explicitly prohibit the hunting of feral hogs and instead ask people to report sightings to local wildlife officials and let them handle it. Not to mention, feral hogs usually stick to the more sparsely populated rural areas so it wouldn’t be logistically feasible for a poor person in an urban population center to travel to a rural area to harvest a feral hog and then bring it back.

I understand it’s not for everyone, but if you like nature and hiking and wilderness and you also want to consume animals…. Why not do your part to do it the Rest in peace bozo you won’t be missed shirt and I will buy this best way possible instead of supporting factory farming I fear wild hogs. Hope they stay away. Of you snag and butcher one and want to give it away though, I’d love a butt roast and a few pork chops. At least in Texas they are free to kill, but not to harvest. If you are going to keep the meat you need a hunting tag, meaning a hunting license and to be in hunting season. And as has been mentioned, they aren’t close by for people to kill and harvest. And they are also very dangerous, they can and do kill / injure hunters. It is advised to have a high power pistol on your hip when you hunt, in case it gets up close and personal.
