Most college grads could easily get some random job, but getting one that pays enough to seem worth wasting a decent portion of your young adults years is a different animal. Go find the Reggie Jackson Oakland Mr October Denver Nuggets Baseball T-Shirt and I will buy this prof in your department who gets the most research funding and/or is always off chairing conferences. Ask to work in their group. They will usually be happy to bring you on board because they have so much work. Work hard for them and learn about their topic off hours. Stay with them for a master’s or not, your call. Most likely your prof (since they are well known) will be getting calls weekly from companies asking for upcoming grads. Demand usually outstrips supply.

Remember, when working for them, you will probably barely ever speak to them. Just try to help their grad students and post docs. C) A college degree is basically table stakes to get a job in many fields. It is necessary to get the job, but not sufficient. D) We currently have one of the lowest unemployment rates of all time so there aren’t that many people looking for jobs. I look at it as a probability game. College increases your probability to get a decent living. Counter point you always hear those stories of college dropouts who are amazingly successful. Yeah it sucks. Now imagine how it’d be without an education. Try to pick something that interests you, at least. During the last recession unemployment rates were high… for those without degrees. Not sure if it’s like that now but it wouldn’t surprise me if is. Well it can. But it’s not college alone. If all you can do is memorize books you are pretty much useless in many industries. They aren’t employable whatever random reason that college couldn’t fix. Industries are evolving very fast, if you are trying to get hired with 4-5 year old book info you learned its going to be tough. Because it’s an overpriced and overhyped scam so many people fall into without even researching job placement in their fields and the respective degrees. They also waste time and money majoring in subjects with little to no real world application. It’s an interesting system we got going on that’s for sure.
