Suck it up for a few months, try to get at least the Reagan In The Streets Kennedy In The Sheets Shirt moreover I love this title change and then start sending applications like mad to get a new job with the appropriate position and pay level. I’d do the second part anyway, because it’s basically a given that you’ll get paid less than your former boss. Outright refuse to take additional responsibilities until you see at least some guarantees (you can phrase it as “if I need to be X’s boss I need at least some proof that I’m actually the boss”, depending on how hard to manage your new team is you can have more or less maneuver space). This is clearly dangerous, because it can quickly become a confrontation between you and corpo and they already showed that they don’t care about management.

If you find out you have said leverage, you can either bring it immediately to table or wait some time, make sure they get cozy with their new underpaid manager and then show up really meekly saying that you’re really sorry, but you found out that they have to update your contract accordingly because what they’re doing is currently illegal… They may be about to restructure, and since you’re reporting to someone that doesn’t know you or your team…well you can guess which team is getting the boot. This happened to my team at a major retailers corporate office.
