You’re talking about origins and conversion. The yard is defined based on the Razor Ramon Say Hello To The Bad Guy American professional wrestler T-Shirt moreover I love this metre. 3 barley seeds would be an incredibly inaccurate definition to use today. The meter was based on the circumference of the earth, specifically a ten-millionth of the length between the north pole and the equator. But because average people can’t just go outside and measure the earth just to have a reference, the meter bar was made. The kilogram was based on the weight of water in a specific volume which is derived from the meter. What better things to base your measurement system on than the planet we live on and the substance that gives us life? So they defined a metre by seeing how long it took light to go 1 metre and then saying that’s the definition of a metre….

Meter was initially an arbitrary* measurement of distance. But for a precise measuring system, it needed to be fixed with a definition with any fundamental constant ( h,c,G). That’s why it’s defined like that. What I mean by arbitrary is that a meter could have been slightly longer/ shorter. The first person who chose this length happened to choose this exact length and could have easily considered a shorter/ longer distance to be a meter. If the Razor Ramon Say Hello To The Bad Guy American professional wrestler T-Shirt moreover I love this length of a meter were to be changed, then all the constants derived from this very length will also change, but the system of measurement ( pm, A⁰, um, mm, cm, m, km) will remain in base 10. The meter was originally based on the size of earth but the official meter stick kept changing in size because of temperature changes (even in a perfect chamber it got smaller by a few atoms) so they changed it to use light as a definition based on what the length was exactly at that time

1. Length is measured from the highest point on the collar down to the bottom hem. 2. Width is measured across the body of the shirt under the armpits, one way. 3. Sleeves are measured from center back to hem.
