The AWT is then put into an app that “Premium Patrons” have access to (if you’re familiar with FastPasses this is kind of an evolution of that). I always figured they counted people entering the line and divided that by # of riders per run or something. They’re lying. It does not provide you with an accurate wait time. It provides those after you with an accurate wait time. Technically it provides you with an extremely accurate time, you just get that estimate as you get on the ride. Obviously a piece of plastic isn’t going to magically provide you with an accurate wait time. Like OP said in the title, it’s used to estimate the wait time, by measuring how long it takes them to reach the front. Which you apparently already figured out, so I’m not sure what you’re claiming they’re lying about.

They can then use these metrics to estimate the wait time based on average time per person or rides worth of people are waiting. Add a buffer for families or groups who want to be seated together… Taking these data averages from a longer period allows them to have more accuracy in the estimates, and cameras feeding into software could allow them to know the line count… Giving an automated estimate that continuously updates, probably in units of 5 minutes.
Last time I went to disneyland I was handed one of these too. The ride then closed down while we were waiting in line and nobody came back to get it so I just… took it home.
