I’ve done it quite a few times but it’s more practical than it is fun. I generally try to stick to 4 hr increments but hell, I just did 8hrs to and from Colorado two weekends ago. 9-10 hours of driving time is my max. With a co-driver I can maybe do 12-13 but honestly I find it brutal on my body and it makes all your pit stops feel really rushed. We drive 2400 each way every summer. I do it, but I feel like my choice of vehicle makes it possible. I go solo from DC->(fuel stop Ohio)->central Wisconsin and I’m totally fine. But I’m driving a diesel F250 that begs to cruise at 80-85. It was middle of winter so I’m sure with more light I could do more but in those conditions, I can’t imagine going much further. I did 1400 miles when I was in university (San Diego to Vancouver straight) and it damn near killed me, even with a friend driving ~250mi of the total. The last 3 hours were insufferable. If I had to do it again I’d need an overnight pit stop or several Adderall… I’ve done a few 1000 mile stretches – Nashville to Amarillo, Madison, WI to DC, Minneapolis to Glacier NP. I would do tiered breaks, and caffeinate in the middle. 4 hours 5 min break, 4 hours 5 min break, 3 hours, 30 min break (caffeine+exercise), 2 hours 5 min break+ caffeine, 2 hours 5 min break. This is 15.5 hours and a net speed of 64 mph which is pretty decent.
