There’s on hypothesis that women accused of witchcraft were often old, and they would have been brutally beaten and tortured before they “confessed” So their faces would have been discolured, their teeth and fingers broken, etc. So on their way to bonfire, they would have been hobbling, twisted ugly wretches. There is a great podcast about witches, called “witch”, done by BBC.
