Anyway, it got so bad people would apparently argue and get in a tizzy over it until a dude finally said let’s all just pick something “wrong” and “different”. So it would go from several different wrong pronunciations of “zed” and went to “zee”. Don’t know if it’s right, but it is a fun answer. So you know when we have all these letters that already have the same pronunciation scheme having a wildly different zed as much more jarring than a zee

The better question in all these cases is to ask why the British started changing THEIR speech patterns, not the colonists. Cause we aren’t weird. We say THree too, not free. And feet in most people’s cases is a foot. 12 inches = foot = my foot = feet Zed actually came about during WWII. When inter plane radios and other talkie radios were used, primarily in Europe, thry used “zed” to pronounce Z to differentiate between B (Bravo), C (Charlie), and V (Victor). In writing, a line or hash mark is included in the verticle part of 7 to differentiate it from the 1, and also with the Z to differentiate it from the number 2, and the oblique like in the 0 / (zero) to differentiate it from the letter O. Zed stuck as common place in Europe, where as the others were lesser used except in Amature radio, military radio, police, etc., and some customer support companies when reciting long serial numbers, etc. The better question is how the heck did we have all these -ee sounding letters, like b,c,d,e,t,v, etc, but somehow ended up with freakin zed. It’s stupid and I’m glad it got changed to “zee” Zee is a much more appropriate naming convention, as it fits with the rest of the alphabet. Bee, Cee, Dee, etc. It also becomes much closer to the pronunciation of the letter.
