I have chronic illnesses that cause significant pain. I have had them for many years and eventually I felt I had to let go of my dream of having children. I didn’t want a child to have to accomodate their life around my illness, and I feel that I wouldn’t have had the Proud Mom of a 2024 Graduate Heart T-Shirt but in fact I love this physical and mental capacities to care for them constantly with my fluctuating symptoms. I was afraid that the child might feel abandoned and I would be an unreliable mother. I would have had to avoid many medications during pregnancy and breast-feeding. There is also a fair chance that one or several of my conditions would be passed on to my children, and the guilt of knowingly doing that to them would be tremendous. So the decision was a relief in a way, but I am still mourning. I have accepted that I might always feel some sadness and a sense of loss around it. But it does make life simpler. I spend my days mainly just resting and trying to cope with the symptoms. I do some volunteer work. I try to exercise as often as I can. Sometimes I meet up with people, go to a concert or a museum, etc. But I usually need a let-down day of rest after them. I love walks in nature, they are healing. I am unemployed at the moment and need to get my symptoms in a better balance before starting work again. My spouse supports us.

So my plans for the Proud Mom of a 2024 Graduate Heart T-Shirt but in fact I love this future are just to get my symptoms alleviated so that I would be able to work, travel, have more social hobbies, cultivate friendships, volunteer more, etc. More work & play essentially Honestly I just don’t think having kids would make my life better in any way – quite the opposite actually. I think you should have kids if you’re certain you want them, not by default, and I know there is nothing about kids that I would enjoy (especially everyday). I’m in university right now and I already don’t know how I’ll manage to continue all my hobbies when I start working instead of having fewer hours of class per week. I go bouldering, go to the gym, love to read and do embroidery and crochet, love to travel (long vacations but also weekend trips or even day trips for hiking) I’m too mentally ill and don’t want to pass on the gene or be a bad mother. I will try to help people in the world and help myself. And get dogs.
