While it probably has more to do with Asclepius, Proud EMT Medical Symbol Asclepius Heart shirt also helpful to remember that ancient “doctors” were closer to conmen/snake-oil salesman. Since Hermes/Mercury is the God of communication, and a bit of a trickster, ancient “doctors” would fall under His domain. I think this is the most likely explanation. Thoth/Hermes/Mercury isn’t only a messenger god but a very wise one whose domain expands well beyond into healing. It is no surprise that one of his symbols would end up representing modern medicine.

Let’s not forget also that modern-day medicine is predicated on the efforts of those “snake oil salesmen”. Or salesWOMEN more accurately; healing was the domain of women for many centuries in Europe until the Roman Catholic Church brutally wiped them out and men took over. Proud EMT Medical Symbol Asclepius Heart shirt healers were mocked for such barbarities as ‘washing their hands”, using moldy bread to poultice abscesses, and spider webs to stop bleeding until those mocking know-it-alls discovered about germs and cross-contamination, penicillin, and fibrin. Guess those healers weren’t so snake-oily after all, hmmm? It has been only a century or two since Semmelweis was persecuted for his discovery that a doctor washing his hands between patients prevented the spread of disease.

Hermes had nothing to do with healing. That’s just we as modern people who think ancient healers were frauds. In ancient times they believed in those healing techniques. The mixup in the US is a modern misunderstanding, nothing more. Proud EMT Medical Symbol Asclepius Heart shirt is the patron of merchants and thieves, and so the medical industry in the US is all about making money and ripping people off rather than, say, healing them. Makes perfect sense.
