If you want visible important tasks, you have to be visible. You don’t have to shout from the Professor Dumbledore Shirt Apart from…,I will love this rooftops to promote yourself but you do have to put in a little effort I don’t like talking either. So I ask people questions to get them talking. Then I ask follow up questions, and I can have a 2 hour conversation without saying much. People seem to like it when someone seems interested in what they have to say. I’m a mediocre dev but people say they like working with me. Seems to be working well so far. I hate bragging about myself too, so when I complete something, I’ll give a big shoutout to anyone who helped me along the way. Also, you just gotta get used to advocating for yourself and selling your work. It’s part of the game, and as gross as it feels in the beginning, you get used to it. Honestly, me neither. And while it does hamper me slightly, I find that this alone isn’t a killer issue career wise. Even writing up AARs, presenting learnings or mentoring newcomers with the knowledge you got from your work is enough to get visibility and move you through in your career if you’re good at your job.

I just don’t like talking Unfortunately, this is part of the Professor Dumbledore Shirt Apart from…,I will love this job. And not doing it well will (rightly) create obstacles for your career progression. Imagine an accountant saying they don’t like excel, and they find it frustrating that this is impeding their career. While yes, that was a bit hyperbolic of me, the general principle still holds true. Like any skill it sucks to get started but working on it steadily and setting short, piecemeal but achievable goals for yourself will pay off. You’re answering your own question as to why over and over and still don’t seem to get it. You don’t like talking. If you don’t like talking you can’t make connections and if you aren’t making those connections people aren’t going to care that you’re there. They don’t want to work with you. You have to talk and form bonds with people. The more they like you the more likely they are to work with you. You cannot expect someone to want to work with you if you make 8 hours feel like 16 because you won’t carry on conversations with any of them.
