I did not go to college whatsoever and have zero connections, however I did work my way through the finance industry first and ended up with broker licenses, so that was at least something on my resume to talk about. I wasn’t doing anything of what I’d consider value, I wasn’t creating anything. I was just helping rich people move their money around and getting paid shit wages to do so. Completely pointless. I also got wildly depressed and had unresolved traumas from childhood and from relationships that were making me worse and worse

But eventually after much suffering, I went the Premium dutch Bros coffee hocus pocus halloween shirt and I will buy this “self taught” route when my friend pointed out that I’m “super smart” and I might like python. I didn’t agree with the first part but I ended up really truly enjoying coding, and it just sort of took off from there. I put self taught in quotes because I don’t feel I taught myself at all. I just hunted down free resources on my own, made friends with smart people in this discipline, and sourced recommended curriculums and portions of paths to go down (otherwise I would have had no idea what to focus on). For me it took about a year before I was freelancing, and about another year before a solid full time offer. During this time I was going to what I’d consider shitty therapy once a week (just because 90 minutes was not nearly enough but it’s all I could afford then), but it was way better than nothing and being alone and isolated in my thoughts, and I was given tools and exercises to do throughout the week to manage these thoughts and feelings. It just needed to be enough for me to not follow through with my plans to end my life with a suicide bag and to keep making some progress. There are miserable software engineer jobs in the US. There are also nice ones. There are ones that pay amazing and have dystopian work environments, and there are others that pay complete shit and have dystopian work environments. There’s others that pay great and have amazing work-life balance with a lot of autonomy. There are shitty teams and managers, and there are amazing teams and managers. Everything varies from company to company, and obviously also from team to team. I now know several engineers that are miserable. I am having a great time feeling valued and making things that matter, but I’m building internal tools for employees, so I’m more or less shielded from the typical sales/product life cycle that leads to misery and burnout, and I’m not on a team that micromanages. I am given a lot of autonomy. I think that’s important, at least for me. And I know this job won’t be amazing forever because eventually I will have to leave to get paid market rate again because raises will never keep up with new hires, anywhere
