Most of my hobbies require physical fitness so they are more fun if I’m fit. Especially tramping (hiking), that is misery if you’re unfit. Also, my health, my mood, my sleep, my energy levels, and on top of that, I get to eat more too. About 4 years ago I was at peak fat-ness at ~350 pounds. I was in a pretty vicious cycle of going to my sales job that I really hated, and then I’d go home and eat like a glutton to give me enough of a dopamine hit or whatever to get back to being “complacent”. It was actually an extremely dangerous cycle looking back on it because I was contributing to worse and worse mental health by gaining weight eating like shit. Like the two things fed off each other and it was quite a cycle that needed to break or I was going to face some major health issues.

I don’t really know if it was just like one day I said “fuck this I need to change my life” or what but I eventually just starting doing what I’d consider “minor” dieting. Still ate mostly like shit but changed from drinking regular coke to diet. At some point maybe a year after adding 1 little rule to my dieting every so often I decided to get a gym membership; at first it was just like, go to the gym one day a week, doesn’t matter how shitty the workout is, just physically entering a gym for 30-60 minutes was my goal. After that it became going two days a week, then three, then workout quality became a thing to work on. Little bit by bit I was suddenly down a significant amount of weight, and it just felt like I was doing 1 little change at time rather than something like suddenly I’m capping myself off at 2000 calories a day or something like that. I also want to mention that waiting for “the right time” like a new years resolution is nonsense and sets you up for failure. If you can’t start a goal on some random day during the week that has no significance at all, you’re not going to do any better by waiting for some specified date.
