The books and film are targeted at the Playboi Carti Streetwear Shirt Apart from…,I will love this Overseas Chinese market and the West. Mainland China don’t really consume media in English and will find the theme distasteful compared to the more traditionally mercantile Overseas Chinese. On the other hand, we Chinese are explicitly trained to tell between kaki lang and those foreign devils, namely the Koreans and the Japanese. Us Chinese are next-level racists down to our traditions. Like holy shit it gets really uncomfortable listening to older Chinese talk about other Sino-Asian cultures. Japanese? Tainted barbarians. Koreans? Immature and inferior. Straits-born (aka. Malaysia and Singapore)? Low quality half-breeds. Thai and Cambodian? Wannabes. Indonesian? Traded class for money. Diaspora in the west? Traded class for arrogance. Literally another Chinese from a neighbouring dialect? National liabilities.

No one has killed or oppressed more Chinese than the Playboi Carti Streetwear Shirt Apart from…,I will love this Chinese, and somehow the Chinese are proud of it in a very twisted sense. Then again, I’ve been “corrupted” by globalisation, so I find myself disagreeing with the traditional type fairly often. IIRC it actually flopped all over East Asia for a number of reasons, mainly that aside from Michelle Yeoh everyone else was basically unknown, and story-wise it was just another drama that plays on tv all the time. Chinese-Singaporeans make up about 75% of the population there and Mandarin is one of the official languages. From the perspective of a Hollywood executive it probably seemed like a logical assumption. (But yes it’s kind of like if the Chinese made a movie set in New Zealand – and in Chinese – and assumed that would be popular in the US.)
