I’ve walked by one a few times in a mall near me. I thought about going in to look at and get a book. But then I thought fuck Amazon trying to make a bookstore after fucking physical bookstores. At one of the local malls near me, there’s been a “coming soon” sign for one of these for the last 6 months. I guess it never is now. You mean the hodgepodge of shit stores that you walk in and say WTF is going on in here? I’ve been in two different styles at high end malls. Both seemed like someone dumped a bunch of stolen Amazon packages around the store. They were stores you’d go to if you didn’t know what you were looking for and wandering aimlessly was your chosen mode of discovery. I went into one of these a few weeks ago. It felt like a thrift shop. There didn’t appear to be any rhyme or reason as to what kind of things they carried. It just seemed like random things that maybe hadn’t sold from a nearby warehouse or something. Those pop ups were a bit of a thing back a few years ago, but I really couldn’t see them taking off in a major way. If Amazon really wanted to do something great, it could speed up the shipping AND HANDLING. I get something that’s “two day shipping” and it takes them a week to START SHIPPING it.

I even ran across a job posting for it on Indeed just a few weeks back. It was so entirely random that I don’t understand how it would work. Like, do you just walk in thinking that of the millions of products they sold, the thing you wanted would be there?
