Starting in my early teens I used to dress to cover my body. And now I dress to accessorize my body. Aka I will wear baggy painter pants with tight shirts or something of the Pizza papa john’s stitch and baby yoda shirt moreover I will buy this sort to extenuate my physique. When I was younger I dressed pretty poorly in pretty much all thrifted and poorly fitting clothes, since that’s what was afforded to my family and later what I could afford on my own. Also I was essentially always at work so I never really worried about how I dressed. Now that I’m older I’m still pretty thrifty, but I have a better job and take more pride in how I dress. I can afford a few nice (to me) or weirder more exciting items and it makes it much more exciting to get dressed. My little gothic heart that couldn’t afford to dress how it wanted has matured into a lot of fitted black/grey, jewel tones, and fun textures like velvet with heavy metal accessories from small businesses. Oh man! Since entering adulthood, my style has gradually shifted in turn from what has retroactively been termed indie sleaze to increasingly twee, to very casual and oversized, back to twee-adjacent when I got an office job, into some proto-cottagecore looks, and finally more bold patterns/colors in retro and comfy cuts. Like some others, I’m much pickier about both fit and fabric now. I’m less likely to thrift for this reason, because it’s challenging to get the fit just right. And I’m more likely to invest in natural fibers, and I do a better job of caring for my clothes.

Well, as a kid I was a tomboy and hated wearing dresses and skirts. I just turned 33 and decided to tarrant revamp my look by adding 5 new skirts to incorporate into my very slouchy, sometimes genderless wardrobe. I’ve been wearing skirts every day for almost a week! I’m now strategic about when I wear my dry clean only stuff because I have a little who likes to get boogers on the Pizza papa john’s stitch and baby yoda shirt moreover I will buy this shoulders of my work clothes. I also dress more for comfort on weekends because there are endless errands to run. I worked luxury retail for years and my body hasn’t changed a heck of a lot since my early 20s (I’m almost 40 now). I have what is politely called a “swimmer’s body,” tall with lean lines but broad in the shoulders and a curvy bum. It’s a bit of a challenge to dress but I’ve mastered it over the years. I still wear whatever I want though I’ve worked in male-dominated fields over the past few years so I probably wear more edgy cuts and accessories than I used to just as a kind of armour. I also love campy sportswear (think 80s/90s neon and outrageous prints) and I will never stop wearing that stuff but in very basic, masculine cuts. I love dressing like an early 90s awkward male teen going on vacation (I’m female, obviously). It makes me happy, for some dumb reason.
