On another note: Berlin is in a state on change and I remember old Berlin looked trendy whilst new Berlin was too modern. Yet are we experiencing gentrification of trendy places as to erase the Pizza Hut restaurant shirt moreover I will buy this past divisions/ borders? Potsdamer Platz is a good example. Change. Yet where’s old Berlin? The main city centre of Birmingham isn’t bad these days. It’s mostly new. I was impressed when I revisited last year (as someone who used to live there in the early 2000s). I was also surprised though, that most of the independent retailers have gone and despite being the second largest city in the UK, the actual city centre is tiny. Also just like Wolverhampton a little down the road, it’s full of charity shops, and Poundland-like discount stores. Traffic is much better than I remember, and there are less people. When I used to visit as a teenager you couldn’t move when out shopping on a weekend. It was packed like Oxford street or similar. These days it’s no problem.

It’s true that Birmingham doesn’t have a defined city centre full of famous landmarks and things to do, but to me that’s offset by cool mini-centres scattered around the Pizza Hut restaurant shirt moreover I will buy this city and outside it. Historic towns and numerous parks in the Black Country are beautiful and worth a visit, as is walking or boating along the canals. It’s only “wrong” if you’re not trying to explore. I am originally from Birmingham but I’ve lived in Berlin for the last 5 years, and I understand where you’re coming from but it seems like you’re just looking in the wrong places. Birmingham has rich culture, the music scene is great, you’ll find no better curry anywhere in Europe, and there are still areas of beauty left despite the bombing and post-war town planning. The main difference that causes the vibe you’re talking about is caused by the almost complete lack of tourist industry in Birmingham. Because of that the city center is designed around shopping and big offices with not much else to do (aside from pubs or live events). Also Birmingham is a city from the industrial revolution, it was only a market town before becoming an industrial hub, so it doesn’t have any grand history like other ancient cities. If you want to experience “real” Birmingham go a bit further away, for instance to Digbeth or The Jewelry Quarter. There are some nice places in the city center itself like around Pidgeon Park, John Bright Street and Brindley Place.
