You don’t say zedbra My God. Europe really is a hellscape of monstrous deformities. “Zeh-bra” ?!? And I thought the way you guys say “aluminum” was bad enough. Imagine being Canadian where you sound indistinguishable from people in the northern US and you freak out your American compatriots when you say “zed.” You don’t want to get into “why do we Americans pronounce/spell/use words like that?” It’s a baffling, endless rabbit hole. Or maybe you do. I actually find English etymology fascinating, from odd American-isms all the way back to its Indo-European roots. From my understanding the southern accent is the closest you get in modern times to the original British accent or original English when America was colonized. So if there is any truth to that then the way the southern Americans pronounce it is the correct way. Not sure how true it is and honestly just don’t care. Fact is words are pronounced differently from area to area all around the world. The British accent of today is not the same accent that it was in centuries past. There was very strong German influence on British English after British people started coming to North America. Fun Fact – if you want to know what Shakespearean/Elizabethan English sounded like, go to Appalachia, it’s probably the most closely related dialect still around today.

I speak several languages and to me every language has some letters that are pronounced weird, funny, or sometimes don’t make sense. Look, I’m a Canadian and I have to give the Pittsburgh Steelers mascot fan or foe 2024 Shirt Besides,I will do this Americans this one. “Bee, cee, dee, eee, gee, pee, tee, vee… Zed” ABC, and XYZ just rolls off the tongue. The alphabet song is “…W X Y and Z, next time won’t you sing with me” Sorry everyone, zee just makes sense. Zee is the letter of the alphabet, Zed is your 29 year-old cousin that hangs out in the high school parking lot. The reason for language corruptions like this are complicated, you could have a half dozen historians in here and they’d all probably argue about the carrier of this. Such questions can’t be reasonably answered because large scale human systems don’t react in logical ways. These things tend to be pretty random and arbitrary. I vividly remember being twelve and saying ‘zee’, and then the teacher singleling me out and saying “Americans say zee, we in Canada say zed”. I just thought “but it’s because they say zee in Dragon Ball Zee” I remember being very confused when we went south of the border as a kid and went through the E-Z(ed) car wash. The zed pronunciation comes from Greek and Latin Zeta, which became Zède in French, and Zed in British English. The zee pronunciation emerged in the late 17th century in Britain and is likely just a dialect pronunciation. It’s unclear why American English has settled on zee.
