Someone I know has a job at the Pittsburgh Penguins Let’s Go Pens Shirt in other words I will buy this local college, hybrid work schedule, they say they have maybe 5 hours of work a week. 55k starting (very LCoL area, though) and the option to be remote. Weekends, evenings, holidays, spring break off – all the goods. When I was searching, pretty much all of the area colleges were looking for admissions counselors, hr generalists, all manner of clerical and administrative positions, etc. that mostly fell under the “have a degree, doesn’t matter what it’s in” umbrella. My wife works at the local state university and we live in a fairly LCOL city in Az. The pay is horrible. Like $60k with a masters and managing 4 people horrible. Very high stress, long hours, some weekends, benefits keep getting more expensive, but she gets a lot of PTO.

To each their own, but I would avoid higher ed unless you are working just to get a tuition discount. Most of her colleagues at other schools in other states are saying the Pittsburgh Penguins Let’s Go Pens Shirt in other words I will buy this same thing. I’m sure there are those unicorn jobs out there too though. I’ve heard and read very mixed reviews on higher ed, but I’m switching over from teaching middle school SpEd, and for a 10k pay increase out of the gate. I value education, and if someone would pay me to be a perpetual student I’d be all for it. But I need a break from the emotional side of student-facing positions. At best, I discover it’s a niche I enjoy. At worst, I get a raise to take a break from students and I return to the classroom a few years down the road when my own kids are older. Basically to find a chill 60k/year job you need to have the qualifications for a 250k/year job and taking something laid back to help with strategic initiatives or advising
