I taught English In South America around 10 years ago the Pine Island High School Class Of 2023 shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this rule then was something like if you spent over 9 months out of the states and made less than 72k you didn’t have to pay taxes. American earing $24K/year teaching English in Cambodia and have not set foot in the US for 15 years? You still have to file an US tax return every year. Did you purposely leave out the key detail that you are paying a vastly reduced amount if you were out of the country for most of that year and paid into the other country? I’m sure this is not true. My friend is a diplomat and circumvents this. I think the rule is you have to live abroad for 330 days at least Every single billionaire would simply live in another country and pay no taxes if they could maintain a us citizenship. They’d end up paying even less than they currently do. That is not how the tax system works. Money that you earn in the US is taxed in the US, no matter your nationality. Even if Jeff Bezos was not an US national, the money he earns in the US is taxed in the US. That is how it works on every country. What the US does goes beyond that Any the money an American earns overseas the IRS wants a cut of it. No other country does that, not even the Scandinavian ones.

I get the Pine Island High School Class Of 2023 shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this sentiment but that is a weird statement. NK is known for making billions off selling slave labor force to foreign countries and SA is known for luring its citizens to dismemberment in its embassies. You’re mostly wrong. If you haven’t set for in America and only make $24k/year you likely don’t owe any taxes. Depends on country of course. And virtually no other country allows someone to become a citizen just by being born on their soil. It’s a real tricky business. Literally every country in the Americas, from Canada to Argentina, employs jus soli citizenship, meaning that they all grand citizenship to anyone who is just born there. Tbf, you can’t be a citizen of a country that doesn’t exist, and countries cost money to run, so if you want to be a citizen, you have pay taxes. I think foreign taxes offset some of it thought. Eh…… if I can live in Europe and enjoy that better lifestyle, I can live with submitting a tax return every year if it means I don’t have to set foot in the US ever again. And if you marry a local European, now that person has to file a US tax return too. And their bank also now has to report their financial data to the IRS. Oh well. You’re paying for the ability to come back and to be protected by the most influential country in a global context, in the most extreme cases. If you’ve moved to Switzerland, but you got snagged by Putin with a vape in Russia, Clinton will show up to try to bust you out. At the same time, if you don’t have much money, then the exit fee won’t apply and if you don’t expect to need the full force of the American government in a global context, then you won’t be inclined to maintain your citizenship. Furthermore, the U.S. only collects taxes on what you would have owed after subtracting what you already paid to the host country.
