My company probably starts drafters around $40k – $45k and you can work up to probably $70k before you would take on a design role And there is such a shortage of good drafters. Like I get redlines back from drafters and I end up having to make most of the changes myself. A good drafter is a godsend for any engineer or architect. Underrated comment. We have two cad techs in the engineering department. One can do anything in civil 3D or microstation. The other only does redlines and graphics. They have the same 20 years of experience. It is almost more work to tell the second how to do something, then it would be to do it myself. The difference a competent cad operator makes is astronomical! Any chance they’re currently looking? I have a background in production design for theatre (mfa and several years in the field post grad) I left the field because of COVID and poor pay just didn’t make it worth it.

All of that just to say, I think I have a fairly well-informed perspective and I’m gonna be completely honest, getting a job at an architecture firm without a professional degree is going to be a challenge. The “architectural draftsperson” career has been on the decline for a long time for a couple reason and I personally don’t know of anyone in my network hiring that roll anymore. I’ve definitely come across late-career draftsmen still employed but they are few and far between. First thing that comes to mind that’s going to be working against you is the fact that most practices have moved away from CAD and into BIM (Revit is the go-to software in the US, Archicad is probably more common in Europe and former commonwealth nations). A lot of factors play into this but at the end of the day, BIM has shifted the drafting roll from a dedicated draftsperson to new grads/young licensed staff based on the workflow. There’s also been somewhat of a mentality shift in that if we’re going to train someone, we’re going to put that effort in training someone who will one day have sign and seal privileges. In the west, eligibility to sit for license generally requires a professional architecture degree.
