Are you familiar with Rocksmith? Basically puts tabs in a guitar hero/rock band UI. No replacement for a in-person lesson, but did a lot to make practicing fun when I was starting out. I was a classic rock loving kid when it came out. I lived in small town USA where country reigned supreme. Suddenly, the Phillies I Keep Dancing On My Own Shirt in addition I really love this music I liked was cool but no one wanted to listen to anything beyond what was on the games and I was still just this weird kid rambling on about b-sides. My cousin is really good at playing guitar. He says Guitar Hero greatly improved his finger dexterity and his abilities with real guitar. I thought it was really cool that it got people into new music. I was in HS at the time and I had been playing guitar since I was pretty young and people would ask “why are you so bad at guitar hero if you can play the guitar”. That was the only annoying part to me. Or people who want to “play” my guitar that I spent years saving money to buy because they were “super good at guitar hero”. They would get mad if I said no. Like bro I’ve seen the way you treat the plastic controller.

musicians were just snobs about it. “why would I play that when I could play real guitar.” can you full combo songs on your guitar with an online leaderboard? no? didn’t fucking think so. played a lot of bass in my teens and early 20s and still played the Phillies I Keep Dancing On My Own Shirt in addition I really love this shit out of these games for the fact that it was just a straight up fun rhythm game. I was just barely to the point where I could learn almost any song on guitar when Guitar Hero 2 came out. I learned almost every song in that game. I had a friend tell me, “don’t just learn Guitar Hero songs.” That was the stupidest advice I had ever heard. The music was so good, and really motivated me to learn them and get better at guitar. And I lived under a rock at that time, so a bunch of those songs I had never heard until then.
