I usually will bring a bike (full size, which isn’t really workable on flights, and is difficult even driving) and use the roll on and roll off service. The ability to bring oversized, heavy, and unique bags without having to pay extra is one of the biggest appeals to trains. I remember in college the Amtrak that picked up right near my house in Clemson SC… It would take 15 hours to get to Charleston SC with 2 transfers in Greenville SC then Richmond VA or something stupid like that… It was a 3-4 hour drive. I do! I love taking Amtrak to visit friends. The journey is part of the trip. Make a sandwich, take an edible, bring a flask of whisky, and just watch the country side go by. I even splurge for the “first-class” option, it’s barely more and for some reason very few people opt for it. Indeed. I can spend several hours waiting and/or prostrating myself for TSA and/or getting fondled by TSA, to then be herded into a sealed petri-dish tin can where I ask for “pretzels” as a snack and get a bag with literally 4 pretzels in it…Or I can have an actually roomy seat, pour myself a cuba libre, and chill. If you’re traveling along the North East corridor, the service is actually pretty good, not crazy expensive, and the stations are right there in the middle of downtown. I took out their credit card when I was in college and riding Amtrak frequently for a two hour trip back and forth. I used my 4,000 points this past February to ride from Pennsylvania to Orlando to visit some family because it was free.

That said, some sleeper cars with the Phil Niekro in Atlanta Braves American baseball pitcher 1980 T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this closet style bunks I won’t even mess with. I’d rather sleep in the bare reclinable seat in the cabin I visit my parents through Amtrak every other month or so, the trip is only between 30-50 bucks which is less than I would spend on gas to get there. It also has the benefit that you can just relax and do whatever you want during the 4 hour trip. Usually I just play with my steam deck or hangout in the viewing car, it’s a genuinely great experience. My biggest issue is that the closest station is about 40-50 minutes from my house so I still have to drive a decent amount. If there were more stations and trips I would love it. I was really looking into the starlight Express but that price basically means I need to plan a whole vacation around it.
