Source : believe me or not but I was in charge to test those coating in a lab to be sure the People should seriously stop normal from me never going happen yoda shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this material used won’t contaminate the beer travelling through the pipe. My job was to be sure the material won’t reject any chemical in the beer (there is not much pipeline like this in the world so we had to be sure) but that was the easy part. I just had to put some beer in a pipeline section we had, wait and then test the beer in an HPLC (basically a device which is capable to separate all the molecule of a liquid) to see if some chemical were presents after different amount of time. The part that will make you jaleous was that there were also “organoleptic” tests… yes, I had to taste the beer at some point. You know… for science 😀 The tricky thing, and that’s the real reason why I was involved, is that our lab made (well, it still make it today but I don’t work there anymore) detergent for brewery and we had to be sure that those we produced could be used safely for that type of pipeline.

It’s a thing to wash a steel tank between brew, it’s a whole another thing to wash a 3 km pipeline made of a kind of plastic. Turned out we had to create a brand new detergent and it was a pain in the People should seriously stop normal from me never going happen yoda shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this ass because we had to find the right formula which can kill any bacteria or fungus BUT without ruining the inner coat. Impressive! Never even thought about cleaning that pipe. Do you know how often they cleaned it with the special detergent? In fact, in theory, as the environment is protected from air and light, as the beer wich pass trough is tested before and is free from any bacteria or fungus, you don’t really have to clean the thing on a regular basis. I think they wash the whole thing quite rarely like in case of maintenance or if they have a contamination issue (wich isn’t suppose to happen as the legislation is no joke here when it comes to food industry). The pleasure was all mine : as a chemist, I tend to not bring those scientific subject in a classic discussion because some peoples sometime find those boring 😀 The part that will make you jaleous was that there were also “organoleptic” tests… yes, I had to taste the beer at some point. You know… for science 😀 But you also had to test contaminated beer then. I’m not jealous of a possible pfas tasting myself to be honest. Our government has given us enough of that for free already…
