OFten its just a title because you’ve got 4 years in or something and they feel you should move up in title (and pay maybe). It’s different at every company. When I ask a manager what I as a tech lead should do.. it’s to lead a team of senior/mid engineers. Be the tech decision maker.. but mostly lead. Yet in my company, I dont lead anyone (never have) and we just code. The same as juniors/mids/seniors. So whats the point of having a title if it’s not going to be put to use? In many companies I’ve read that titles are often almost made up.. and in fact you can see tons of various similar title names in sales, marketing, hr, etc.. titles I’ve never heard of before in a lot of companies. Because that company decided to name a person “this title”.. which means nothing in other companies.
