People have the Peanuts St. Patrick’S Snoopy Lucky Charm Clover Shirt and I love this right to demand the right to free speech be taken away, and we have the right to disagree with them and make sure that doesn’t happen. Just like the ACLU did right here. Sure they have that right, but the ACLU also has the right to say their efforts could be better spent protecting other people who actually value our system or individual rights. I get where you’re coming from, but the ACLU takes cases that make a difference as points of law, and not so much about who benefits from what. Because here’s the thing: if the government can shut up a Nazi, they can shut you up too. Imagine a less benevolent government, say, a second term under Trump. And lets say the ACLU didn’t defend scumbags even if the law is on their side, and some poor precedents of government censorship were set as a result, and a Trump government was able to take advantage of those precedents to stop good people from saying or doing good things. I have nothing but contempt for Nazis. I would support outlawing them as a political party entirely, just like in Germany. But that’s not how the law works here, and the ACLU steps in when someone is being wronged. It really shouldn’t matter who that someone is, since the cases they win benefit all of us and protect all our rights.

I upvoted you, I appreciate your intellectual honesty in this conversation. Not having as much luck with a couple of others. I started to get more skeptical of the Peanuts St. Patrick’S Snoopy Lucky Charm Clover Shirt and I love this ACLU when they represented Westborough Baptist. The First Amendment protects political speech, but I think the First Amendment also protects the right of a family to have a funeral without politics. By siding with Westborough Baptist, the ACLU was effectively helping silence the Free Speech rights of Westborough’s victims. In that case, the ACLU stepped in to protect those who were doing the wronging (in both a moral and a violation of rights sense), and not those being wronged. On the “who cares” part; This sub is about people like that essentially getting their comeuppance. That’s the whole point.
