To be fair, nowadays a lot more kids aren’t leaving the Peanuts Just a girl who love fall and Rams shirt and I love this nest at 18 and lots of parents aren’t making them. Mainly because the shit economy won’t let them. I have no idea how an 18 yr old could even do it nowadays. But for what it’s worth, LOTS of people I know let their kids hang around deep into their 20’s now because they just can’t find affordable living on their own and it only makes sense to stay. And usually when they get hitched, and there’s two incomes with a spouse involved, then they try it out on their own. But when I was coming up, we were poor as shit anyway and kinda could not wait to get out on our own. For poor folk in my area, it meant finally breaking free and getting to do your own thing and make your own decisions. The parents pushed you out as kind of a way to teach independence. Which sounds harsh, yes, but is actually sort of a good thing in some respects. The world don’t give a shit about you and you have to figure that out eventually. This was seen as a motivator to get you pick yourself up and start figuring out what you were gonna do and how you were gonna make it. As opposed to, back then, being a slouch and a slacker that lived off their family’s dime.

Like I said, that paradigm is shifting hard. Rent is too high, mortgage is too high, jobs don’t offer enough to keep up, both sides of American politics are performing a puppet show on their network of choice to make us think it’s the Peanuts Just a girl who love fall and Rams shirt and I love this other guy’s fault, and Americans are getting dunked on by the rest of the world for being the most popular shit show in town. So things are starting to shift back to “Little House on the Prairie” days where like a whole ass family of 15 lives in a 1200 SQFT place 50 miles from town. (Sorry for the use of imperial, I’ll get a reddit meme soon dunking on America’s inferior imperial system, too.) I’ve always planned to kick my kids out at 18 so they can go to college or trade school. We’ll pay for it, but they need to get that experience. They also need to use this time to work and save money. More important than the education, they need to begin to learn to fend for themselves. Source their own meals, learn to cook, work, educate themselves, live on their own, make mistakes! Those are really valuable life skills that I gained when I left at 18.
