Someone can know everything on an IQ test but have significant test anxiety that negatively skews their score, and most workplaces don’t have test-like environments even in stressful, anxiety inducing situations. Someone can study for an IQ test and improve their score, which shows it’s clearly not about raw potential like many believe. But are we really drawing a line now at IQ tests specifically? We’ve had companies doing Myers Briggs personality tests for the past 20 years. They may as well just ask us our star sign. Yeah I had to take a test for a job I really wanted once. It had sections for IQ, personality and one with SAT type verbal and math questions on it. I was so nervous that I remember struggling with a word association question because I was second guessing myself about the words ‘vulpine’ and ‘lupine’. I know this and I know I know these. But anxiety can really fuck with you. Especially when you’re an adult, it’s been several years since you were in a testing environment, and the results actually matter in getting something you want.

IQ tests don’t really measure intelligence as much as some people would like to think. Exactly. The test worked initially because no one was used to that kind of questions and it required actual intelligence to figure them out at the spot. Nowadays, its far more memory based as someone who remembers even one question will be leaps ahead of an equally intelligent person who scored one question less. But still with good IQ tests intelligents people have a good score usually, even if they didn’t train for IQ test before. So it’s not totally useless, just incomplete as evaluating someone. There’s not many fields where IQ tests would be helpful and even in the ones is, they are smart enough to know IQ tests are bogus 99% of the time
