They make a pretty clear case for wearing them. If there is something or someone in a car that is not secured, they become a projectile in the event of an accident. I’d refuse to let them in my car or refuse to ride in theirs if you don’t want to risk it. Having grown up with adverts like this one I always make sure I’m wearing a seatbelt and anyone else in the car is too. I don’t think that’s unreasonable; and in fact it takes a level of maturity to make that kind of choice. When I was younger and other peoples’ behavior would make me uncomfortable, I’d just swallow it and hope for the best. As an adult I realize that I may not be able to control other people, but I do have the ability to remove myself from stressful situations and do not need to defend it to anybody. Not only is it stressful for you that she constantly puts herself in danger, but it’s also stressful to you in terms of what liability you may carry as a result. Plus, if someone’s engaging in harmful behavior and nobody around them does anything about it, they’re enabling it. Most likely your friends are saying you’re overreacting because they just don’t want to deal with the conflict; but if your gut is telling you that you don’t want to be part of that anymore, follow it. Grow some ovaries and tell her to put on a seat belt or take the bus. When she is driving, she can do whatever she wants. It is selfish of her to put any severe injuries she might sustain if something happens on your conscience. If you are driving, then it is your rules. If your friendship can’t survive that, then something else would’ve messed it up eventually. WOMAN UP!!!
