Slave Laborers. They immigrated to Japan for work and but were essentially tricked, treated as second class citizens and paid non living wages. Yeah, I’ve gone twice and it’s a punch in the Pawprint Press Echo Circles shirt and I will buy this gut every time (once was on my first visit, and again when I lived there and brought a friend who was visiting me). It really just stays with you for a while, like a stain on your soul. I thought the second time would be easier but boy was I ever fuckin wrong. It was almost worse somehow. Was just there for the third time a couple of days ago. First visit was decades ago. The shadow on the step is a life long memory. It’s a great museum but it’s difficult. When I went several years ago there was a poem in one room which has really stuck with me. I hope it’s still there: I went there twice as well. The first time I went with a Swedish woman I’d met in the youth hostel. We both felt we’d need some company to get through it. We made it almost all the way through, and there was a photo of a dying soldier whose face had basically melted. The caption said, “ Soldier in the agony of death.” The Swedish girl, whose English was excellent, said, “what is ‘agony’?” I said, “Terrible pain.” We looked at each other and knew we’d both had enough… went out to Miyajima and laid on the beach and petted the tame deer.
