English has become the Paranormal Friday Shirt and I love this “default” language for business, technology and international relations. Thus, we get a free pass in a lot of scenarios in which other language single speakers would be screwed by not knowing English or another language. What? The language of America is English. Just because other people are there doesn’t mean there’s no language here. If you go anywhere you are expected to know English. Laws and code are written in English. There are people in Japan that only speak English and there are English signs around, that doesn’t mean japanese isn’t the language of the country just because some people dont speak it. That and English is a widely accepted Lingua franca. Because “USA has no official language” is just trivia BS. For all intents and purposes, English is the language de facto of America. I would rather have a good leader who does their job and does it so amazingly that people want to repel the 22nd amendment than one who can speak a large amount of languages but cant lead a person down a narrow hallway(not saying they are mutual at all)

Why should they? Canadian here but learning a new language does take quite a long time. And political leaders have access to translators so why the Paranormal Friday Shirt and I love this fuck should they? Learning multiple languages isn’t considered a high priority in the US relative to many other places. That’s true for the population as a whole, not just the political leaders. English is the main language used for international events and business, so it’s more valuable for a non-English speaker to learn English than it is for an English speaker to learn a different language. Presidents have access to professional translators, so even a monolingual person can interact with other foreign leaders who speak other languages. Additionally, even if the president is multilingual, they’re still going to meet enough foreign officials that they’re guaranteed to meet a bunch of people who speak obscure languages they don’t know.
