It’s OK to just “be busy” make this contact less frequent. Invite other people to make it less intense or invite him to events. Particularly with the Otter Let Me Pour You A Tall Glass Of Get Over It And Here’s A Straw shirt but in fact I love this last one, it allows you to reframe the relationship and put in new ground rules. Namely “we don’t waste time drinking in the pub, we meet up to do things” That will be a hard conversation to have. But you have articulated this exact sentiment in dozens of comments to strangers on the internet. It is a conclusion you seem confident in, well formed feelings, clear goals for yourself and existing family, and a history with this mate that seems to show impossibly bleak hope of adapting with you. It does feel shitty to say “soz mate, don’t wanna hang out anymore”, but it feels ten times worse to think it constantly and not say it. It doesn’t have to be as heavy and pointed of a conversation as a romantic break-up, but if you continue to have a clear and true feeling about anyone in your life that you are unwilling to act on, then you may be a part of the codependent problem in the friendship.

If he has access to support and doesn’t take it, while being a symptom of MH problems, and also ironically a solution to them, there’s nothing you can do. You aren’t an emotional support animal nor can you fix someone else’s problems. You could have a conversation where you sit him down, before alcohol is consumed, and say that you care for him but your lives are going in different directions. You want to be supportive of what he’s going through but he isn’t taking the Otter Let Me Pour You A Tall Glass Of Get Over It And Here’s A Straw shirt but in fact I love this initiative to help himself and its difficult for you to be a bystander. You have a wife, children, ambitions and are looking to improve your quality of life, and would love for him to do the same, but can’t invest time in a stagnant friendship.
