The high rejection rate for military service in WW2 was largely due to childhood malnutrition, something impossible to correct later on. Lets remember most of the Original FAAFO The Golden Girls USA Olympic Paris 2024 Signatures Shirt In addition,I will do this young men spent a good part of their lives in the depths of the Great Depression when jobs and food were hard to come by for millions. This is why the Pentagon pressed for school lunches with success for national security considerations. School lunches were not some liberal feel good program. When my grandmother (born in 1917, grew up on a farm so they had food but were cash poor as always) was 14 she and her friends would hop freight trains in the Upper Midwest for something to do. They’d be several states over before they’d hop something heading back home.

He was charged with going AWOL for abandoning his post to go to his grandmother’s funeral. His sister went to the Original FAAFO The Golden Girls USA Olympic Paris 2024 Signatures Shirt In addition,I will do this press to try to help him, after all she helped forge his documents to serve in the first place. Purple Heart is the one you should never keep from someone. This man was injured serving his country and they kept the medal from him… Obviously he couldn’t get an honorable discharge, because his service was quite literally being cut short, but an administrative seperation with no brig (jail) time, letting him keep all his medals, and allowing him to return to the service when he turned 18, if he so chose, seems like an obvious no brainer. He must have been the king of shit-talking the Navy. I know that all servicemembers shit talk the other services, but this kid had actual experiences to shit talk them about

More like when being punished by dad because mom said so, but dad is secretly on your side. So he’s just punishing you until you’re old enough to not have to listen to mom anymore. Yeah… I don’t have time to read more right now, but… what situation was this kid in where he could get away with joining the Original FAAFO The Golden Girls USA Olympic Paris 2024 Signatures Shirt In addition,I will do this Navy at 12? Where was his mom before that? My grandpa joined up during the war when he was underage. It was an economic solution for many people plus it was a popular war, people were really proud to go fight. His mom divorced his father, was with another man, his father died, he was an older looking 12 year old, looked 14-16. Joined with other 14-16 year olds who al lied about their age after blackmaling a dentist who called him out specifically for not having all of his adult teet, but signed off on the other kids.

It wasn’t uncommon for the Original FAAFO The Golden Girls USA Olympic Paris 2024 Signatures Shirt In addition,I will do this time for kids that age, especially rural, to effectively be treated as adults, they’ve generally received 6+ years experience working at that point, on the family farm. And with the comparatively poor communication systems of the day, runaways were not only common, but frequently meant that kids straight up disappeared, regardless of the reason. Basically once the kid was out of eyesight, they could cease to exist, effectively. And for many, it was one of the best paying jobs they’d ever see an opportunity for. Seriously, tons of kids joined the military in WWII, and earlier. It was easy as shit to lie about your age and get in. A fairly stark contrast to today. However, Graham was worried about the dental exam. He later said, “I knew he’d know how young I was by my teeth.” The dentist fought him a little, protesting that he wasn’t old enough, but Calvin Graham told the dentist he knew his friends — whom the dentist had already passed — were not old enough either. The dentist grudgingly passed him.

After he joined the Original FAAFO The Golden Girls USA Olympic Paris 2024 Signatures Shirt In addition,I will do this Navy, he told his mom he was going to visit his grandmother. In reality, he was shipping out to San Diego for basic training. Make sense. I thought there’s not way even looking a little older for your age that a 12 year old would pass as an 18 year old. WW1 and WW2 showed the US just how bad nutrition was at a national level. Tons of skinny smaller dudes from rural areas, and then you have the random dude who is just a giant. Heck many recrutis/conscripts got to have shoes for the first time by joining the military. the first time Charles Bronson (and his brothers) had new clothes and 3 meals a day was when they joined the Army. His Brother was a ranger and was in the shit the whole time, and he said he would have done it all over again before he set foot in a coal mine again We had a guy in my unit in bootcamp that put on 30 pounds of weight because he’d been kicked out of his home at 16 and had been malnourished for the past 2 years. Son! I said no killing Japs until you’re at least 16!!! Now get to your room and give me those damn medals! You can get them back when you’re not grounded. I get discharging him and sending him home but why strip his medals. If anything, his age makes those metals even more deserved lol
That’s the Original FAAFO The Golden Girls USA Olympic Paris 2024 Signatures Shirt In addition,I will do this beauty of child soldiers, they’re still young enough to form other core memories to help outgrow the shell shock! /s He did eventually regain is his lost honors. The last, his Purple Heart, was re-rewarded after his death though. That’s actually the only (spiteful?) gesture that I don’t understand. The PH is all about being wounded while under fire for Uncle Sam. How does being 13 years old “disqualify” him from that? Its even more hilarous when you realize that they manufactured so many PHs by the end of WW2, there is still a surplus of PHs (perhaps 70K?) still in stock. according to his wiki he broke his back on a pier during korea and he fought his whole life to get veterans healthcare for it. he didn’t get the PH for that injury but i wonder if his back and fight for support contributed to them not wanting to acknowledge service related injuries
To discourage future “recruits” lol. Imagine the Original FAAFO The Golden Girls USA Olympic Paris 2024 Signatures Shirt In addition,I will do this badass story of a 12 year old getting war medals. Every 12 year old ever would be attempting it lol I could think of a few legal reasons but Morally it shows that if you do sign up (considerably) underage you will be stripped of everything and sent home. It sends the message that if you do it and get caught it will end badly for you. If you just gave him a slap on tbe wrist and sent him home I could see other children trying it. It seems his intentions were good and honorable, but at the end of the day, we can’t condone children soldiers. Even if they beg and plead to be one. For those that didn’t read the article – the purple heart was given back to him two years after his death, at the age of 62. I Saw Rick “Ricky” Schroeder in the made for TV movie “Too Young the Hero”, it was based on this story. I saw it when it originally aired in 1988, and I was 10 years old. Weird to think I was just two years younger than the guy when he actually joined the Navy! Malnutrition ran rampant due to the great depression, so it wasn’t to unusual for someone to not have hit puberty or to have some significant growth spurts being fed nutritionally balanced food. Combine that with the fact that he joined with a group of 14-16 year olds, and he probably looked as old or older than the others around him.
