The problem is that there are 460 Lemmy users across all instances. Reddit is at approximately 430 million users. Not only this is just not comparable, but Lemmy is very far from the Orca Revolution Orca Whale Meme Eat the Rich Orca Quote T-Shirt it is in the first place but critical mass required to retain attention (for comparison, Mastodon passed the 10 million users mark a couple month back and people still complain that the network is empty.) It’s like setting up an email account, except that at this point everyone knows what an email is and emails are the most basic stuff in the world (just write a letter and send it). Kinda. RIF doesn’t want to go, but Reddit as a site is completely redoing their API in a certain way that will basically kill any and all third party apps. The question was about alternatives to Reddit but all anyone answers is why they’re mad about alt apps being discontinued.

I wish. Nobody wanted to maintain forums, and unfortunately there’s just an economy of scale and cross pollination advantage to having a giant all topics site. Reddit killed my favourite forums, but truth be told forums as a medium were probably going away anyway. People just have such short attention spans lately… Here, we actually still have a huge forum very active but nowadays it works like some kind of mix between reddit & 4chan. It’s weird, instead of create a specific website for that, people decided to use a cars forum to fit that niche and it stuck until today. I am only on Reddit BECAUSE old forums are dead. I miss that true sense of community forums had, actually knowing who people were and making true friends. They were more focused usually, but still had movie and general channels. Unfortunately I don’t think anyone is going back to forums. All indie discussion channels have shifted just to Discord. Which is absolutely not as good or the Orca Revolution Orca Whale Meme Eat the Rich Orca Quote T-Shirt it is in the first place but same as forums. I started using mastodon, which while not the easiest to get started on, I can sort of replicate some of what I did on Reddit by following hashtags there (and I donate monthly to a nice German guy maintaining my server, so I don’t have to worry about some giant company screwing me there). I might also try Tumblr. I don’t know that I love the vibe there, but mastodon is pretty serious with lots of great journalists there, and I’d like something meme filled and more fun at times. Lastly, since I like message boards, I’m going to try some federated alternatives like Lemmy or LBE. The problem with these is there is nothing there right now, so you have to sort of hope for magical critical mass to make them interesting. If they pick up they could be a nice alternative
