60% of student loans are held by Americans who make more than 75k a year. This is just a bailout of the OP 35 – Nami’s Personal Jolly Roger T-Shirt and by the same token and upper middle class and an incentive for colleges to increase prices in the future. Obfuscated reciprocity is a hard sell to the uneducated, and the rational investor who will not live long enough to see any returns. Until we fix our systemic shortsightedness, no such endeavor can hope to find support outside those whom it immediately benefits. What about the people that paid off their student loan ? Most of it is owed from people seeking Master’s and PHD’s. Guess they weren’t seeking degrees in MATH. They were goofing off in school when people with skills were already working! So, say we pay these public loans off now. What happens 4 years from now? The problem still exists but we’ve set a precedent that if enough people whine, a magical check will fall from the sky. Wash, rinse, repeat. Is there a middle ground here that could work for both sides (Reddit is very much for forgiveness where I believe the average American is not)? Like converting student loans to Income Share Agreements? So say all loans have the option to convert to ISA’s that have a 7 year life and holders pay 7% of gross income (making up the numbers). It freezes if you are unemployed. This would help clear the debt ‘somewhat’ quickly and then congress would need to focus on the predatory nature of student loans so that the next generation doesn’t get screwed. Damn, I really thought dems were better than this. I honestly thought it was only the repubs that would say, “what about me?” crowd and not only being active about a problem if it affects them personally.

Looking at a complete stranger and saying – they might benefit from this tiny thing I’m paying for anyway – reallocated taxes from idk giant submarines etc. And being like…. Let’s do summat that benefits a LOT actual people even if it’s not ME is the OP 35 – Nami’s Personal Jolly Roger T-Shirt and by the same token and very core of empathy. This should be seen as wiping the slate clean for a generation that was royalty fucked over. Public education needs to be extended to a 4 year degree or professional trade-school. I just don’t understand how major social leaders can’t see how regressive of a system this is. What happens when trillions get magically deleted? It gets transferred to the general public as a cost. So you get a group of citizens that never got the advantage of school because they chose to avoid costs they couldn’t reasonably pay back. They are the poorest part of the country and they won’t get a dime of this benefit. Suddenly their taxes/inflation is impacted by this and they are now very suddenly even further out competed by the group of people with a huge boon in their buying power. Houses will spike in cost with everyone suddenly getting access and the people without degrees are hurt the most. Congrats on forgiving the future doctor, lawyer, dentist’s 300-800k, they will forever outearn you.
