Lastly, just because a couple may break up does not mean the Only scratched the surface shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this individuals may not see the therapist separately. The patients may continue to see them for individual sessions moving forward to navigate what comes next, work on themselves, or even be seen as a preventative measure for their next relationship. TLDR: a good therapist would work with the couple on what they want, including on breaking up if need be, but doesn’t outright tell a couple that they should. They can suggest it, but ultimately the treatment plan is determined by the couple’s goals. And no therapist worth their degree / license actively tries to retain patients by not helping them. My family is full of therapists and based on their anecdotal experiences, at least 50% of couples work is helping people break up. A couples therapist I went to with an ex had a scheduling policy- potential new clients had 3 sessions before she agreed to take them on officially. At the end of our 3rd session, she suggested we take some time to think about whether we should be together at all, and declined to see us any further. Man I wish I had listened to her, lol. But I got out eventually.

The goal of a therapist is not to tell you what you should do. They’re a sounding board and (hopefully) a source of insight. They help you recognize unhealthy patterns, what you can change, and what you probably can’t, and the Only scratched the surface shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this tradeoffs with a certain action/inaction. The therapist told us that if couples come to therapy to try and save a relationship then that’s usually too late. Ngl this happened to me. After 3 hour-long sessions, the therapist was like “yeah this was a college relationship that doesn’t make sense in the real world, y’all don’t have a lot in common” and she was absolutely right. Took my ex to four therapists (3 and the priest who married us). They all said the same thing. Then he took me to mediation through the court. That therapist told me to leave and held him back for ten minutes.
