I came back from my mission right at the Oh The Places You’ll Go Dr Seuss shirt and by the same token and end of 2015, and the 2016 election was the first I voted in. There were a lot of things that led to me leaving the church, but one of the significant ones was seeing so many people I respected support Trump, people who had been my bishops or in my mission presidency. I was assigned to a Spanish speaking mission, so it felt especially like a slap in the face. They sent me to save the souls of the same people they were baselessly reviling as murderers and rapists. We never asked or cared about citizenship or immigration status, but one of the people I taught told me the story of his coming to the US as a minor, getting shepherded across the border, seeing the bodies of people who didn’t survive. I was there when he got a call that one of their family friends back home had been murdered. He might not have been a ‘legal’ document, but it was also pretty clear he was a refugee, a group the church explicitly taught to help. He wanted a better life for him and his family, and I have no doubt that many members would do the same thing in his shoes. That’s a large part of the whole move to Utah business in the first place, in Mormon history, and of course there’s the story in the Bible of Jesus being a refugee.

Like I said, there’s a lot of reasons I left the Oh The Places You’ll Go Dr Seuss shirt and by the same token and church, but seeing the people I looked up to demonstrating such blatant hypocrisy, seeing that they didn’t believe you’re a child of God if you’re brown and speak Spanish, seeing them love Trump more than Jesus and his teachings, that opened the doors to a lot more issues for me. And all that hypocrisy has only gotten worse in the years since 2016. Well it wouldn’t matter who the Republican nominee is, WY is voting for whoever the R is anyway. Thats not what we / op are really talking about here He’s leading in like four swing states, and Georgia being a swing state is new as of 2020. Headlines tend to exaggerate things. This is also only based on a few polls. One is the New York Times, so these aren’t totally dismissible, but there is a full year and thousands of polls between now and then.
