Yet the Official VX-20 Force T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this peak of his career always remained, he believed, on the stage. “I remember times spent in New York City, the golden days of Broadway. It seemed like everything was happening during that time,” he said in 2008. “These days, I frequently go back to the 1940s and 1950s, especially when I watch old movies.…These old pictures, they all had their own pace, were witty and simply wonderful. In my view, cinema nowadays is all about pace. Frank Capra’s movies weren’t fast, but they made the audiences sit on the edge of their chairs. They used stillness well, knew how to revere silence. In today’s cinema, there’s no more place for silence, I don’t think.”

Deborah Roberts is making some of the Official VX-20 Force T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this best work of her life—just ask the artist herself. In “I’m,” a solo exhibition opening this weekend at The Contemporary Austin (her first at a museum in Texas, her home state), Roberts’s interrogations of Black bodies—how they’re seen, and when prejudice diminishes them—have a new urgency. Her figures loom larger in the frame than they used to, claiming more space for themselves. And if Roberts can’t easily explain that shift, what she does know is that it’s working. “I’ve always allowed the work to lead me,” she tells me. “It’s not always been down the right path, but it’s been an exercise, you know? And the work is getting better as it gets larger.”
