My first response to the original article was that they should merge with the suicide hotline because I assumed that it would end a lot worse than this. So, I guess they had a better outcome than I expected. I know it’s fun to circle jerk about AI but Tessa was NOT an AI chatbot. She was a glorified phone tree and not based on LLM technology.

I don’t think they realize that. That’s the difference everyone is missing. Eating disorder treatment is based on reframing the traditional medical approach and learning to reorder the patient’s relationship with their body and food. The pain point is victim/patient blaming, gaslighting the overall agony they feel with typical responses from humans w/o that experience, and recommending diet and lifestyle improvements over addressing the cognitive distortions of ED.
