Back in Alaska, the used to break in to my basement apartment. Then smoke and drink so the smell goes into all the apartments. Then you wake up, and try to warm up ur car while walking through about 10-30 people saying sorry man it’s cold out.

They camp, like with camping supplies, scavenged, bought, stolen or improvised. Wherever they can, with the Official she’s Eating For Two I’m Drinking For Three Beer shirt moreover I will buy this least hassle. Every winter, the security guards for the college at which I worked would tend to find, on average, one homeless camper frozen to death in the woods at the edge of campus, where the property abutted an elevated highway. They tended to have a good sense of when the guards would come by, move out for the day and come back afterward, so they only found the dead ones that got left behind. DC sends around heated busses during cold snaps in the case where citizens report individuals who may be at risk. Of those that don’t, those with some level of cognisence will pitch tents and set up wood stoves, barrels, propane heaters, etc… and weather the winter in groups. This draws them away from the urban centers to more suitable locations for long term encampment, such as disused industrial lots with some tree coverage, etc… And then, increasingly, there are those so addled by drugs or mental illness that they are unaware of the changing weather and dangerous conditions to come, and whose behavior precludes them from sheltering in groups with others. How do they survive the winter? Some don’t. More than you may think simply die. Most major urban areas in the northern states have very early morning paramedic patrols on the coldest nights, in theory to save, in practice to clean up. Some do. By some chance some are able to survive in temperatures that any official authority would call “unlivable” – as they say, y’aint dead till you’re warm and dead.
