From the time I graduated highschool to when i got my associates degree(3 years. Dont judge) entry level jobs in my area went from wanting an associates to wanting a bachelor’s. They still paid the same and for the most part 10 years later still pay nearly the same as they did in 2013. The game is rigged. Because it’s about bargaining power and not skill. Employers would pay PhD geniuses rice and beans to work for them if they could.

There were many moments in the 20th century when state governments tried to “fix” their economies by incentivizing and subsidizing certain career tracks. For example in PA and OH in the 70’s, a massive push for chemical engineers. Guess what they got? A glut of chem-E’s and lower wages, no ability to progress in the field. Let’s not victim blame people for not magically guessing what the robber barons will say they want, and let’s empower people to leave college with critical thinking skills and a robust understanding of human culture.
