Yeah, that sticker is the Official Islanders shirt besides I will buy this placenta, a fascinating organ. It actually belongs to the fetus and not the mother. It is the fetus’s kidneys, lungs, and liver, and it drills itself into the uterus to extract resources, while excreting a variety of chemicals that suppress the immune system response of the mother and change how her body functions, especially the circulatory system. The scary part is that the placenta can also make the mother’s body go haywire, causing blood pressure to skyrocket and inducing organ failure or strokes (this is called preeclampsia). This is more likely to happen with multiple fetuses, which can create more than one placenta in the womb. That’s why pregnant women with multiples often get induced early.

The placenta is also the Official Islanders shirt besides I will buy this cause of gestational diabetes. The placenta produces hormones to protect the baby, but these hormones interfere with the action of insulin, making it much less effective. As soon as the placenta is delivered, most gestational diabetes disappears (I think it’s around 98%…in some people, who were predisposed to diabetes…type 1 or 2, it can remain or come back, but it’s usually much easier to manage). Currently struggling with gestational diabetes and the baby needing all the iron and B12 that I can take in, to the point I’m having infusions and injections to keep up. Hookworms do a similar thing by blocking histamines in the host. It provides a beneficial side effect if that host suffers from chronic allergies, but it is most assuredly not done out of kindness from the hookworm… Leaches inject anesthesia and anticoagulants into the host, and maggots eat away dead and decaying flesh; which is why both have been used historically medicinally.
