It has become a class and a symbol of literacy (not a symbol of intelligence). It is already the default language in the wealthy class of Indians. In the 18th century, it was just the language of one country. But now the story is totally opposite. With the advent of the Internet, English is slowly creeping its way into the education system, replacing ancient education systems. With the number of people going abroad for studies and are taking permanent citizenship, I really doubt Indian languages are going to have the same status in the future.
