Man, I grew up on this crazy shit. My parents worked in the church and I went to school there too. Carman and DC Talk were huge back then. They would frequently come to our church (Church on the Rock) to perform. Crazy shit. This song blew up in the church community too. This was my favorite DC Talk song when I was a kid and was being indoctrinated in modern American Religion. There were the other standards, Michael W Smith, Amy Grant (before her affair with Vince Gill), Twila Paris, and Official Addicted To Jesus shirt. Newsboys, too. Yeesh, I haven’t thought about this stuff in 20+ years.

When I got sober 5 years ago, I went for about a year. I hear ‘by the grace of God’ and such but it’s not like a religious meeting or anything. You can even use a word that just means something bigger or important to you, could even be your family. I struggled with this as well for a bit, but once I realized nobody was pushing anything Official Addicted To Jesus shirt subsided. Plus if someone needs something to hold strong getting sober then so be it. Just listen to the experience and knowledge of people who are 30 yrs sober.

I’ve died twice drinking and there are people there who made me feel like that was nothing big. Seeing the faces of people who lost someone and that they survived and found a normal life is more impactful than reading stories. I would advise that you go to maybe 4 meetings, even one at 4 different locations and seeing how they feel. You can always get up whenever you want to leave and you don’t even have to speak. If Official Addicted To Jesus shirt, not for you, at least you know that as a fact. Some places have really cool people that are also atheist and some people are bitter assholes because they lost a family or whatever fucked up thing happened.
