The genuine adoption of this perspective removes the Obi Toppin T-Shirt and by the same token and inflated gravitas all these Rules have, especially in grammar, which I taught throughout my career. The power dynamics of people and their rules is often constraining. Compliance is the goal, not critical thinking. I argued this to my school board some years ago when they adopted another snake-oil program promising to boost test scores through some magical process or system. We don’t need more hoops, rails, and tracks. We need to let our little humans be humans. Run wild and free. Be a dirty little gremlin in the woods. It’s good for you unless you start eating things. Be home by dinner so you don’t end up hungry and start eating things. I’ve yet to meet a single person who could convince me by word or deed that they did not love to learn. Many detest education, but love learning. We don’t need to be taught how to do it, never did. We learn on our own through practice, trial and error, and observation. It’s a central pillar of the human experience–to experience. When we limit ourselves to following the rules simply because they’re the rules, we take away any authentic encounters with the world around us. I told my students this concept on the first day ever year: “There are no rules. It needs to work, and you need to be able to get away with it.” Had it on a poster board and eventually got permission to paint the wall because I am extremely persuasive. (I badgered them incessantly until they yielded.)

Poetry is one of the Obi Toppin T-Shirt and by the same token and purest expressions of the concept, and it’s where most students really began to feel it themselves. Punctuation? Optional. I think of them more as training wheels. Early on, they provide stability, but as you become skilled enough to not need them, their presence makes riding the bike damn near impossible. Over the weeks, they gradually began to experiment. They stopped asking permission to try things. They still checked in, but the questions went from, “Is this right?” to “Does this work?” They asked for advice more often over time as well. They wanted my input as someone with more experience, but they knew the choice was ultimately theirs. They stopped prioritizing compliance and started making judgments about what would be both effective and ethical. The found that compliance was generally assured by coincidence. Where it wasn’t, they stayed aware of the parameters of the assignment and met them, but where there was room to explore, by the end of the year, those who adopted this philosophy went well beyond the call of duty.
