This reminds me of that one (Atlantic or NYT) article that looked at kids and healthy foods. A lot of healthy vegetables are acquired tastes where a kid will need to try them multiple times before they decided they like it. Rich families (where the Not from paris madame Mike Tyson shirt in addition I really love this parents might also have more of a taste for these things to start with) can afford to buy vegetables over and over again. Poor families can’t afford to keep buying food that the kids won’t eat. (And on another level, if you’re exhausted after working a taxing job all day–because let’s be real, a lot of “poor people jobs” are especially physically and emotionally taxing–you probably don’t want to spend so much of the little time you have with your kids fighting about vegetables.)

I was once downvoted to -50 because I suggested rice and beans might be a better dinner at $2 than a $10 frozen pizza. People parrot the Not from paris madame Mike Tyson shirt in addition I really love this idea that food deserts & expensive health foods are to blame, but that doesn’t apply to vast majority of situations. I’ve been poor. Rice and beans were always cheaper, and they are never popular. There is a whole contingent of the population who legitimately believes that you take care of others by buying them expensive, harmful things that temporarily feel good (“eat more donuts!”), vs encouraging long-term, unsexy habits. Others think that if you eat beans, you’re showing everyone that you really ARE poor. Better spend money on chips, instead. Lower income is also strongly associated with expensive, unhealthy habits, like smoking. But no one talks about that either. At some point, you have to admit that people don’t know what is appropriate self-care, and they are surrounded by people who agree with them.
