Where I live in Scandinavia I know of no particular major benefits for tax or anything so to me, no definitely not. Why would I want to involve the Not For Sale Shirt and by the same token and government in my love life? Seems like mostly just an absurd remnant of patriarchal religious systems of control and oppression now mostly to the benefit of corporate greed, guilting and manipulating people to spend absurd sums of money on pointless shit. Scandinavian as well. I agree there seems to be no point in “making it official” by letting the government know. If I want to spend my life and have kids etc with a certain someone, what’s stopping me? But I also think it’s worth clarifying the question from OP a bit: are we actually specifically talking about marriage? Or are you also asking about “is life long monogamy with one person worth it”? I feel like those are two different questions. I was just about to answer. Is legal marriage worth it? Depends where you’re from…. Is life long companionship worth it? Absolutely!!

I’ve been with my partner for 8 years, we are building a life together but we don’t need a piece of paper and the Not For Sale Shirt and by the same token and government for that… When I quit school to start working full time so he could get his degree, I knew we were in it for the long run! I agree with you to some extent; I belong to this wedding dress site on here and I often think if brides spent as much time picking a partner as they do a dress, there’d be a lot less divorce. All I will say is that a marriage certificate didn’t keep my ex husband from looking outside our marriage. A piece of paper does not mean a person will love you forever, and if you do divorce, it’s a big and expensive process, even with a no-contest divorce. You can be with the same person forever without getting married. For those reasons, no, it’s not worth it. I love being married, but it took time and a lot of work to get to where I am. The first half of my marriage I was so focused on what I was getting out of the marriage. Now I’m focused on making sure she is fulfilled, safe and loved. Since I do this, it frees her up to do the same for me and we are both very happy. We’ve gone through some pretty terrible things together over the last few years and I don’t think I would have made it out the other side without my wife. Life is way more fulfilling and I’m way happier now than I was when I was single.
