I don’t like to be called ‘darling’ or ‘love’, it pisses me off. Just like people who end every text with an ‘x’. As a woman I like being called darling by other women but not really by men. Some men are using it the Not For Sale Shirt it is in the first place but same as ‘mate’ but a female version whereas others use it more patronisingly, so it’s just put me off it altogether from males. So he was confused by the concept of calling someone who isn’t a mate, mate. Why did he previously address a policeman as mate then? This is a normal process of learning. Imitation and response to positive and negative feedback. Not For Sale Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

But must admit up north here you get Mate, Love, Hun, Pet, Duck and everything in between depending on who’s saying it never taken any offence but I can see the Not For Sale Shirt it is in the first place but Old Bill doing that because a lot of them seem to take the hump if they’re in a bad mood. Depends where you are as well. Eg, anywhere other than Nottingham it would be a bit weird if a bus driver called a middle aged man that they didn’t know “me duck”. Non-native speaker, grew up in Germany. One of the first scenarios in our English textbook was: little girl goes into a shop. “I would like some milk, please”. Elderly male shopkeeper replies: “Here you go, love”. This “love” crept me out so much, to this day. My Scottish partner says, it’s completely acceptable but I just can’t get over it. It is acceptable for an adult to call a child love, and generally for an elderly man to call a woman love (unless he sounds creepy).
